Zurich Jazz Talks #4

After six years as Musical Director, Steffen Schorn is now Composer in Residence of the Zurich Jazz Orchestra. We talk about his role change and his work as a composer.

“It’s an absolutely natural, organic process. It’s not that now I see a score in front of me and a pencil and the pencil and the score are between me and the music, but I actually feel the band around me. So I know immediately each voice, who’s sitting there at the voice, I know how the individual sound is, how that mixes in the whole. I can write stuff on the soloists, of course, but it’s just a very organic approach.”
